Goin' up around the Bend... (Part One)

As this blog's title suggests in its very Creedence Clearwater style, Kaity and I are heading to Bend this weekend to do some small hikes around the area. We were supposed to leave tonight after we both got off work, but my husband decided to be logical and check the roads heading down to Bend, alerting me to the fact that we will need snow tires on our car before we're able to depart. There's kink #1, as I do not currently have snow tires on my car. I had refused to put them on earlier in the week when I had the time to because I didn't want to be the only ass hole driving around Salem, Ore., on bare roads with studded tires. So, kindly, he will be taking my car into Les Schwab first thing in the morning to get our tires switched, so hopefully, we'll be able to depart by 09:00. We shall see about that, given our past track records. Here's hoping!

As all big ventures, this started with a brown paper bag (read about our first brown paper bag, here) listing our to-dos and grocery list. As we have discovered in our previous hikes and outdoor activities, we are horrible at fueling for the main event. Maybe it's because we're girls and do things like eat with our pinkies pointed up, or maybe it's because we are afraid of being fat, but mainly it's because we just have a hard time stuffing our faces with enough energy to store for burn later. Bottom line is, we never eat enough before we go, then we're left feeling dizzy, lightheaded, and weak. But because we're stubborn and tough, we always keep going, doing all the unhealthy things we preach about in our careers and lives. For this trip, we're convinced  we'll do it up right. We'll practice what we preach and start off the morning with more than bird food, then pack food with us along the way.
In prepping for our eating extravaganza, we decided to make a list on our brown paper bag of the foods we'd like to binge on. Come to think of it, we're ridiculous for not realizing we could have exploited this situation to pig out this whole time. Our list consisted of things like macaroni and cheese (the blue box only, of course), whole grain pancake mix with bananas and peanut butter, taco potato fixings, etc. Basically, anything that is nutrient dense, so we don't have to eat a lot in volume to get the caloric surplus. We also picked up a box of Capri Sun juices to take with us on the hike because A) they're lightweight, B) calories and sugar for quick carbs and energy and C) when was the last time you had one of those?! Of course, we picked up your typical hiking food, like trail mix, fruit leathers, cheese sticks, etc., but seriously, where's the fun in that?
